The novel follows a determined young orphan known only as Freckles, who arrives at Indiana’s Limberlost Swamp seeking work and finds employment guarding valuable timber for a lumber company. Though he begins the job terrified of the wilderness and unsure of his place in the world, he gradually gains confidence as he learns to appreciate the swamp’s beauty, befriends its wildlife, and earns the respect of his employers and fellow workers. Along the way, he develops deep connections with a nurturing couple and falls in love with a courageous young woman he calls the “Swamp Angel,” even as he struggles with feelings of unworthiness due to his uncertain origins.
